Today, I’m excited to share with you the second instrument in my Monthly Instrument Series: Grandma’s Wind Chimes

I’d like to share with you all one of the most cherished sounds of my childhood. First let me set the scene: it’s early summer, flowerbeds are blooming everywhere, the sun is beating down on your face. A gentle breeze dances through the magnolia trees that dot the yard and accompanying that breeze is a constant, but comforting sound. Wind chimes.

My grandmother always had wind chimes in her yard. Their welcoming din would greet me when I arrived and be an invisible companion for as long as I stayed. I can hear them so clearly in my mind still to this day. Wind chimes, and the hum of table saws coming from my grandfather’s wood shop are how I remember those times.

My grandparents have since sold their house and the wood shop and moved in with my aunt. However, the wind chimes came with. Late last year, when I went home to visit family, I took the time to sample my grandmother’s wind chimes with the intention of making an instrument out of them.

The first preset played in this video is a pretty damn good recreation of my memories, down to the key and rhythm:

In my post announcing last month’s instrument, I mentioned that I love sampling the “small, simple, and mundane” sounds. For me, this sound is small and simple but it’s deeply profound. I’m so grateful to have these memories from my childhood and I’m even more grateful to be able to have a recording of these wind chimes. I get a little choked up knowing now that these memories will live on in my music and I’m honored to share them with you as well.

A couple of photos circa my early childhood (1995ish?)

Next week, we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled post. Until next time.
