Today, I’m excited to share with you the first instrument in my Monthly Instrument Series: Tiny Waterfalls

My absolutely favorite part of making music is finding it in the most unexpected places. As I’ve grown in my abilities as a composer and producer, I’ve learned that you can truly find music everywhere — should you know how to coax it forward. Tiny Waterfalls is an atmospheric, glitchy, textured synth made from a recording of water running off of the broken pavement outside my apartment.
You can hear for yourself what it was and what it became in the first 30 seconds of this YouTube video:
If you’ve read this newsletter for any length of time, then you will know that I love sampling the small, simple, and mundane. This instrument is a lovely example of that ethos. Also, did you catch that? I’m on YouTube now! This tutorial marks the beginning. I’ll have another video out next week and I hope to continue on a weekly or bi-weekly cadence, but we’ll see. That’s a problem for the future. For now? I have my first video out. That’s worth celebrating!
I plan on treating my YouTube channel largely as a way to share the educational work I do in a more accessible format. It’ll consist of tutorials, track breakdowns, lyric videos, music videos, and whatever else might come to mind. I’ll be sharing the work I do in a similar fashion as I do my college courses. It might not be the flashiest or most entertaining but it will be authentic and educational. I’m looking forward to it.
Next week, we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled post. Until next time.
